Tome of Kaldor History of the Kingdom of Kaldor

Kaldor was founded in the year 512 by three brothers fleeing oppression in the far off island kingdom of Meldyren. Arriving with all their retainers, the formidable host was able to eradicate or drive off the barbarous tribes of the area. Led by King Baldwin I, the new-comers to Harn, called the "Jaren" people, seized control of the large village of Kald. Over the next 75 years of unrimmiting warfare, they carved out the small but formidable Kingdom of Kaldor.

Several more wars developed in the south, while a small amount of trade was opened up with the ever secretive but skilled Khuzdal to the north. Kaldor continued to expand, but its culture remained stagnated by the near constant warfare in the south. Great tracts of forested land lay to the north-west, but there dwelled the Taelda, a fierce savage people. Most frustratingly, they avoided all open battle with the heavily armored Kaldoran Knights. Disappearing into the green depths of their forest home, they have to date resisted all intrusions quietly, with hidden watchfulness. While they seldom raid into Kaldor lands, armored intruders who venture off the Fur Road have been know to disapear forever.

Beyond the Taelda to the west lay several known lairs of Gargun, the goblin-folk. Seldom able to unite, they sometimes raid into Kaldor. While they are greatly hated, they are seen more as a pest for local Barons to deal with.

It is the year 721. Kaldor's King is very ill, and has been so for over 3 years. He has several younger brothers, but the most visible and well respected peer is Lord Maldan, the Duke of Olokand. His supporters have taken to refering to him as "the Earl", and to wearing an Owl broach on their labels, the Dukes personal symbol. This is particularly annoying to other peers, as the Earl of Olokand has historically also been the King.
